- Historique notable
- Abolished in the 2010 reform that merged it into the Western Military District, and re-established by decree in February 2024 when the Western district was split back into Moscow and Leningrad districts — a reversal the Russian ministry presented as an answer to NATO's enlargement and that analysts read as a return to the Soviet-era pattern of one district per strategic direction. Its peacetime armies are the 1st Guards Tank Army, rebuilt after its 2022 losses at Kharkiv, and the 20th Combined Arms Army, whose divisions the module carries. The district administers the forces on the Belgorod, Kursk and Bryansk borders that the Ukrainian incursions of 2023–24 reached, and the mobilisation and training base behind them.
