- North-western Russia from the Baltic exclave and the Finnish border to the Arctic coast. Its formations have fought in Ukraine, but its orientation is NATO's northern flank. Nothing about dispositions is authored.
- Historique notable
- Abolished into the Western Military District in 2010 and re-established in February 2024 as the other half of that district's split, with an orientation the ministry stated openly: Finland's and Sweden's accession to NATO. The 6th Combined Arms Army is its peacetime formation; the Northern Fleet's ground forces and the Baltic exclave's garrison sit beside it in the same strategic direction. Much of the district's peacetime strength has been committed to Ukraine since 2022 — the Kharkiv axis of 2024 was staffed in part from its formations — and the district's rebuilding is the structural change Russia's northern neighbours watch.
