Synthèse
The United States recognises Beijing diplomatically and maintains unofficial relations with Taipei under the framework of the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act. It supplies and advises Taiwan without formally committing to it, and has never stated that it would intervene. The ambiguity is deliberate and works in two directions: Beijing cannot assume the United States would stay out, and Taipei cannot assume it would be rescued regardless of what it declares. Its structural weakness is that it is a belief rather than an obligation — it costs nothing to maintain and can be devalued by statements alone, which is what made the 2026 handling of arms transfers analytically significant independently of what is eventually delivered.
