The United States recognises Beijing diplomatically and maintains unofficial relations with Taipei under the framework of the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act. It supplies and advises Taiwan without formally committing to it, and has never stated that it would intervene. The ambiguity is deliberate and works in two directions: Beijing cannot assume the United States would stay out, and Taipei cannot assume it would be rescued regardless of what it declares.
