Synthèse

Ankara has treated the SDF's Kurdish core as the PKK's Syrian branch since its formation, and acted on it: Euphrates Shield in 2016 blocked the cantons from joining, the Afrin operation in 2018 removed one, and Peace Spring in 2019 took the border strip between Tal Abyad and Ras al-Ain. The same demand — dissolution of the YPG — governed Türkiye's reading of the integration process, and Abdi's public appeal that Ankara not obstruct the January 2026 agreement was addressed to exactly that. Türkiye's removal of an integrated former YPG commander from its wanted list in 2026 signalled a conditional acceptance of integration by name. On 25 August 2026 the SDF dissolved itself; the relationship recorded here ended with it.

Pourquoi c’est important

It is why the northeast could not be settled bilaterally between Damascus and the SDF: any arrangement had to survive Ankara's veto, and the shape of the integration agreement — brigades dispersed into divisions, the YPG name gone — is as much a product of this relationship as of the fighting.

• What Türkiye required of the integration outcome beyond the YPG's formal dissolution — command arrangements, the fate of specific commanders, the status of the Women's Protection Units — is stated in outline and not in a published instrument.
• Whether Ankara regards the August 2026 dissolution as satisfying its demand is not established; its subsequent position is carried on the Türkiye–Damascus defence records.
