Synthèse

Islamic State Sahel's western zone reaches into Niger's Tillabéri and Tahoua regions, where its attacks on villages, markets and state posts date from 2017 and accelerated after the 2023 coup removed the French and American air and intelligence support the Nigerien forces had relied on. The province took the Labbezanga river crossing after the garrison withdrew, attacked Niamey's airport in January 2026 — an attack Moscow says its forces helped repel — and holds the initiative in the tri-border zone while JNIM and the state fight elsewhere. The Nigerien response has been army sweeps and the National Guard's rural posts, with a documented civilian-harm record of its own. On 29–30 August 2026 soldiers from units that had sustained heavy losses in the west attacked the capital's airport, palace and Base 101; the mutiny is the clearest evidence of what this relationship costs the state's only institution. Neither party has offered talks and no local arrangement of the kind reported in central Mali is documented in Niger.

Pourquoi c’est important

Niger's transition justified itself by this war and has not turned it; the expulsion of Western forces, the Russian partnership and the AES joint command are all answers to it, and the August mutiny shows the answers have not reached the garrisons that fight it. The module's state-reach question in Niger is this relationship.
