NATO's enhanced vigilance activity for the Arctic and the High North, launched in February 2026 under Joint Force Command Norfolk. Its stated purpose is visibility rather than force: giving planners sight of what Allies already do nationally and consolidating it into one approach.
It is the third named vigilance activity on this flank and the one that claims the least. Baltic Sentry added assets to a sea; Eastern Sentry added assets along a frontier; Arctic Sentry is described first as a way of SEEING what allies already do separately. That is a statement about the High North's actual problem — national activity uncoordinated across an enormous, thinly instrumented space — and about the alliance's preferred instrument, which remains a named activity assembled from contributions rather than a new command.

Running since February 2026 and carried on SHAPE's own page of enhanced Vigilance Activities alongside Baltic Sentry and Eastern Sentry as of 22 September 2026. It has replaced nothing: Icelandic Air Policing and national Arctic activity continue, and NATO presents the activity as consolidating them rather than superseding them.
Adaptations observées
Three Sentry activities were launched inside thirteen months — Baltic in January 2025, Eastern in September 2025, Arctic in February 2026 — in the same form each time: named, multi-domain, assembled from national contributions, led by an existing joint force command, with no new structure created. Arctic Sentry makes that a pattern rather than a pair.
Implications politiques
It brings the Arctic under a named alliance activity for the first time, and it does so through the command that also faces the North Atlantic — a structural signal that NATO reads the High North and the Atlantic approaches as one problem.
