It is the third named vigilance activity on this flank and the one that claims the least. Baltic Sentry added assets to a sea; Eastern Sentry added assets along a frontier; Arctic Sentry is described first as a way of SEEING what allies already do separately. That is a statement about the High North's actual problem — national activity uncoordinated across an enormous, thinly instrumented space — and about the alliance's preferred instrument, which remains a named activity assembled from contributions rather than a new command.

NATO describes Arctic Sentry as a multi-domain military activity strengthening its posture in the Arctic and the High North, launched in February 2026. Its stated function is not additional force but additional sight: it is to provide NATO planners with full visibility of Allies' national activities across the region and to consolidate those actions into one coherent, overarching operational approach. It is led by Joint Force Command Norfolk, with overall strategic direction from Allied Command Operations; JFC Norfolk collaborates with Allied Command Transformation and coordinates with the joint US–Canadian North American Aerospace Defense Command, US Northern Command and US European Command. In September 2026 JFC Norfolk described Exercise Arctic Shield 2026 — more than 400 personnel from eleven Allies training across Greenland, with Danish, Canadian and United States fighter aircraft flying alongside it — as part of the activity. The United States' posture testimony to Congress of 18 March 2026 describes the activity as initiated by General Grynkewich in his SACEUR capacity to align NATO and selected allied national activities in the Arctic, and records in the same passage that Greenland moved from US European Command's area of responsibility to US Northern Command's — a second official description, from a national rather than an alliance source, that matches SHAPE's on purpose and on lead.

Running since February 2026 and carried on SHAPE's own page of enhanced Vigilance Activities alongside Baltic Sentry and Eastern Sentry as of 22 September 2026. It has replaced nothing: Icelandic Air Policing and national Arctic activity continue, and NATO presents the activity as consolidating them rather than superseding them.

Three Sentry activities were launched inside thirteen months — Baltic in January 2025, Eastern in September 2025, Arctic in February 2026 — in the same form each time: named, multi-domain, assembled from national contributions, led by an existing joint force command, with no new structure created.
