The Warsaw Summit establishes forward presence — Key Events — NATO Eastern Flank

What happened

Building on the Readiness Action Plan, Allies agree an enhanced Forward Presence in the north-east of the Alliance and a tailored Forward Presence in the south-east. NATO describes the two decisions together as the biggest reinforcement of Alliance collective defence in a generation.

Every multinational battlegroup in this module descends from this decision, and so does the distinction between the north-eastern and south-eastern halves of the flank that the Force Atlas still reflects in its multinational headquarters. The formations are called battlegroups today because they were defined as battlegroups here.
