What happened

Sweden becomes NATO's 32nd member after the last national ratifications, completing the tenth enlargement wave and the accession process begun with Finland in May 2022.

With Sweden inside the Alliance the Baltic Sea is enclosed by NATO and partner coastlines except for the Russian shores at St Petersburg and Kaliningrad, and Gotland sits in the middle of it. Reinforcement of the Baltic states from the west stops being a question of transit rights and becomes a question of allied capacity.
