What happened

NATO states that in September 2025 Russian drones and planes violated the airspace of several Allies, including Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland and Romania, and that incursions of Russian drones into Polish airspace and of fighter jets into Estonian airspace led to security consultations under Article 4 of the treaty.

This is the month in which airspace integrity became an alliance-level political question rather than a series of national ones, and it is the stated trigger for Eastern Sentry.
