- Formed in 1995 for the Chechen war and the army that fought Georgia in 2008, the 58th has been Russia's Caucasus field army for three decades and brought that garrison experience to the Zaporizhzhia front. In summer 2023 it held the fortified belts south of Orikhiv against the Ukrainian offensive — the defence that stopped the 2023 counteroffensive short of Tokmak and shaped the war since. On 12 July 2023 its commander was removed after telling his superiors, in a voice message made public, that the army was being bled without rotation and without counter-battery support; RUSI's analysis of the 2023 defence and the public record of the dismissal together make it the best-documented Russian army of the war.
