- Rolling steppe uplands cut by river valleys and gullies, with a near-continuous belt of mining and metallurgical settlements running through it. The distinguishing feature is artificial: decades of coal extraction left spoil heaps standing well above the surrounding ground, and heavy industry left reinforced structures scattered through and between towns. Open agricultural ground lies between the settlements, but very little of it is out of sight of something built.

- Movement across the open ground between settlements is unconstrained by slope and thoroughly exposed to observation from the spoil heaps and the higher ground. Movement through the settlements is slow and costly for the opposite reason. The practical result, visible throughout the eastern campaign, is that advances proceed settlement by settlement rather than around them: bypassing a built-up area leaves an observed and defended position on the flank of everything that follows.

- Two mud seasons — spring thaw and autumn rain — turn the black-earth ground off the metalled roads into a serious obstacle for vehicles, which compresses movement onto a smaller number of hard surfaces and makes those surfaces predictable. Winter frost hardens the ground and removes the leaf and crop cover that concealed movement in summer. The pattern is consistent enough that operational tempo on both sides has followed it for a decade.

- The Siverskyi Donets is the only substantial water obstacle in the region and has repeatedly shaped the northern part of the front. Elsewhere the barriers are man-made or incidental: flooded mine workings, canals, rail embankments, and the industrial sites themselves, which function as strongpoints because they were built to survive industrial processes rather than because anyone fortified them.

- Unusually dense for a region of this population, and continuous rather than clustered. The Sloviansk–Kramatorsk agglomeration anchors the north; a chain of mining towns runs south from it. This is the reason the campaign here destroys cities as a matter of course: there is no way to contest the ground without contesting the settlements on it.

Three effects, and together they explain the shape of the war's main effort. First, the combination of observation from high ground and continuous built-up areas gives the defender a structural advantage that neither side has been able to overcome cheaply, which is why the line moves slowly regardless of which side is attacking. Second, because settlements cannot be bypassed safely, the campaign is a sequence of urban assaults, and each one destroys the place being fought over — the humanitarian consequence is built into the terrain. Third, the ground has been fortified continuously since 2014, so attacking forces meet defences prepared over a decade rather than over a season, which is a materially different problem from the one presented anywhere else on the front.

Every major eastern action since 2014 has been a contest for a settlement or for the ground overlooking one: Sloviansk in 2014, Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk in 2022, Bakhmut through 2022–23, Avdiivka in 2024, and the Pokrovsk axis since. Advances between them have been measured in kilometres over months.

Reading the eastern campaign as slow because of poor generalship on either side understates the terrain. A fortified, observed, continuously built-up belt is among the most defensively favourable ground in Europe, and the rate of advance achieved there is closer to what the ground permits than to what either army would choose.
