- Renamed to its present form in February 2006 under the reorganisation of the Ministry of National Defense, and held at the same level as the three army corps rather than beneath them. That placement is the analytically interesting fact: every other ROC Army formation of comparable standing is tied to a piece of ground, and this one is not. It is the army's mobile reserve in the literal sense — rotary-wing lift and attack aviation plus special-operations forces that can be committed anywhere on the island or to the offshore groups without being reassigned out of a territorial command first.
