W skrócie

Arab-community movement formed in April 2012 that split in 2014 into CMA-aligned and Platform-aligned wings — a reminder that “Azawad” was never a single community or side. The CMA-aligned wing joined the FLA in 2024; the loyalist wing fought for the government in the Gao region.

The Timbuktu region for the Bérabiche-based CMA wing; Gao region — Bourem, the Tilemsi valley, Tabankort — and Lerneb for the loyalist wing.
Istotna historia
Formed on 1 April 2012 as the National Liberation Front of Azawad, by Arab notables and former soldiers who wanted a voice for their community in a rebellion led by Tuareg, and renamed the Arab Movement of Azawad late that year. Many of its fighters had served in loyalist Arab militias before 2012 and some passed through MUJAO during the occupation, which rivals never let it forget. It joined the MNLA and the HCUA to form the CMA in 2014, but the same year a loyalist wing split away and entered the Platform, so that from 2014 to 2024 two movements of the same name fought on opposite sides of the Algiers Agreement — the CMA wing, largely Bérabiche from the Timbuktu region, and the Platform wing in the Gao region under commanders such as Yoro Ould Daha. The CMA wing dissolved with the coalition into the FLA on 30 November 2024; the Platform wing, weakened by leadership disputes, faded with the coalition it belonged to.
Mocne strony
A community base the Tuareg movements could not reach — the Arab trading and pastoral networks of the Timbuktu and Gao regions — and, for each wing, a coalition seat.
Ograniczenia
Divided from 2014 along the same line as the north itself, with each wing smaller than the whole; a reputation for proximity to jihadist and trafficking networks that its rivals used against it. A historical record: the CMA wing's present is the FLA's.
