W skrócie

The Saharan command of al-Qaeda’s Maghreb affiliate — kidnap economy, desert logistics and the doctrinal core that trained the 2012 generation and held Timbuktu during the occupation; its emirs were killed by French forces in 2013 and 2019, and the command folded into JNIM in March 2017.

Szeroki obszar działania
Northern Mali's desert and the Adrar des Ifoghas, southern Algeria, northern Niger and Mauritania; Timbuktu during the 2012–2013 occupation.
Istotna historia
AQIM was created in 2007 when Algeria's Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat pledged to al-Qaeda, and its Saharan zone — katibas that had operated south of the Algerian war since the late 1990s — became the affiliate's growth engine. Under emirs including Abdelhamid Abou Zeid and, until his departure, Mokhtar Belmokhtar, it built a kidnap-for-ransom economy that took more than twenty Western hostages between 2008 and 2013, financed the network and embedded it in the smuggling routes of northern Mali. In 2012 it occupied Timbuktu alongside Ansar Dine, whose leader Iyad Ag Ghaly it had cultivated for a decade, and imposed its rule there until the French intervention. Abou Zeid was killed in the Adrar des Ifoghas in February 2013; Djamel Okacha, known as Yahya Abou el-Hammam, who had been appointed overall Saharan commander in late 2012, led the command through the reconciliation with al-Mourabitoun in 2015 and into the March 2017 merger that created JNIM under Ag Ghaly, and was killed by French forces in 2019. The Saharan command's doctrine, finances and veteran cadres are what JNIM inherited; the coalition's al-Qaeda pledge runs through this record.
Mocne strony
Two decades of Saharan sanctuary and financing, the al-Qaeda affiliation that gave the Malian insurgency its international frame, and the cadre that trained the 2012 generation.
Ograniczenia
An Algerian-led organisation whose Saharan katibas fell out with the leadership over money and autonomy, which is how Belmokhtar's split and the later realignments happened; its emirs were reachable by French air power in a way the rural insurgents were not. A historical record: nothing here describes present activity.
