Mali's membership of ECOWAS, ended with the collective AES withdrawal completed in January 2025. What Bamako surrendered was a vote on the rules, the dispute-settlement machinery and the standing to shape a market it still depends on; what it kept was the trade.

ECOWAS formerly had as a member Mali — Transitional Authorities. A directional arrangement: the two parties do not hold the same position in it. Authored once and read from both ends.

Podsumowanie

ECOWAS closed borders and froze Malian assets in January 2022 to force an election timetable. The sanctions inflicted real economic pain, failed to move the junta, and handed it a sovereigntist narrative it has used ever since; lifted in July 2022, they are the proximate cause of the bloc's loss of leverage over Bamako. Mali completed its withdrawal alongside Burkina Faso and Niger in January 2025 — the largest rupture in ECOWAS's fifty-year history. The membership is what ended: ECOWAS said it would keep the free trade zone in place until further notice, and citizens of the three states continue to enjoy visa-free movement, residence and establishment across the bloc. Neither side has treated the exit as final in practice, and what is being negotiated is the shape of a relationship rather than a reversal.

Dlaczego to ważne

It is the clearest case in the corpus of a sanction achieving the opposite of its object. The measures were designed to restore constitutional order and instead supplied the legitimating argument for leaving the institution that imposed them — which is why this module treats the 2022 episode as the proximate cause of the 2025 exit rather than as background to it.

Co pozostaje nieznane

  • `validFrom` is 1975, the founding of ECOWAS, and is context rather than a date this module establishes. What these sources date is the sanctions episode and the January 2025 withdrawal, which are the load-bearing facts.
  • This module carries no dated event record for the withdrawal itself; the January 2025 date comes from the ECOWAS and AES actor records.
  • Which retained arrangements — free trade, free movement — would survive a negotiated future framework is not established.
