- The ministry gives the lineage in full: the 28th Army of the Soviet third formation, raised on 5 September 1942, its field headquarters placed at Grodno after the war, transformed into the 28th Army Corps in 1993 and — in December 2001, "within the ongoing reforms of the Armed Forces" — into the Western Operational Command on the corps' basis. The ministry describes the two operational commands together as the foundation of the Ground Forces on the western and north-western operational directions.
