Kontekst terenowy

Strefa Gazy

A flat coastal strip about 40 km long and a few kilometres wide, densely built up and almost wholly urban. It has no depth and no interior space, and its access to the outside runs through a few crossings, which is why the crossing regime governs Gaza as much as any line on the ground.

Przejście Kerem Szalom / Karem Abu SalemPrzejście graniczne

Gaza's cargo crossing, and since 24 May 2026 its only one in operation. It matters for access, not for movement of forces: an operating crossing is not the same as aid arriving, and the module's access records measure the difference.

Charakter fizyczny

Dominujący teren
Niska, piaszczysta nizina nadbrzeżna z pasem wydm wzdłuż morza i nieco wyżej położonym terenem na wschodzie, przecięta jednym istotnym ciekiem wodnym, Wadi Gaza. Przed wojną niemal cała była zabudowana lub uprawiana: cztery główne obszary miejskie — Miasto Gaza, obozy w środkowej części Strefy, Chan Junus i Rafah — połączone obozami dla uchodźców, miasteczkami i polami uprawnymi, bez terenów dzikich między nimi.
Konsekwencje dla mobilności
The ground itself offers no obstacles and no cover; what governs movement is density. Built-up areas, and since 2023 the rubble of them, compartmentalise every part of the Strip, and the short distances mean that any designation across it — the Netzarim corridor, the Philadelphi corridor along the Egyptian border, the Yellow Line — divides the population as well as the ground. Movement of civilians and of aid has been set by evacuation orders, access restrictions and coordination requirements rather than by terrain.
Ograniczenia sezonowe
Gorące, suche lata i łagodne, wilgotne zimy.
Woda i przeszkody naturalne
Water is the Strip's structural shortage: the coastal aquifer is over-abstracted and largely unfit to drink, so supply depends on desalination and on pipelines and fuel from outside. The perimeter fence with Israel and the border with Egypt are the barriers that matter; Wadi Gaza is the only natural feature that divides the Strip.
Urbanizacja i osadnictwo

The Strip's geography explains why the Gaza file is about access and administration rather than ground. With no depth, any line across it — the October 2025 Yellow Line above all — places a large share of the land and of the population on one side or the other, and OCHA reports about 65 per cent of the land under access restrictions as of October 2026. With every supply line passing through a few crossings, the crossing regime determines humanitarian conditions, and whoever controls those crossings controls the pace of reconstruction.

Zaobserwowane

Since the October 2025 ceasefire Israel has held an area behind the Yellow Line that has grown from about half the Strip to around two-thirds by independent estimates, while the population is concentrated in the remainder and cargo enters through one crossing.

W ocenie Vigil

In a territory this small the line on the ground and the crossing regime are two halves of the same control; neither can be read without the other.

Co pozostaje nieznane

  • The Yellow Line has no published, agreed geometry; the module carries reported estimates of the area it encloses and never draws it.
  • The extent of destruction and of unexploded ordnance is assessed by UN and World Bank surveys whose coverage of the Israeli-held area is limited.
