Drawn by Vigil in IconSprite.astro from the 1992 order that defines all four PLA service flags on one construction: the top five eighths are the PLA flag and the bottom three eighths carry the service colour — five stripes, three blue and two white, for the sea. No file is fetched and no artwork is copied. An ensign never replaces state affiliation; this record still reads CHINA.

- Historique notable
- Organised across the three fleets and expanded steadily over two decades, with conventionally powered boats forming the numerical bulk and a growing nuclear-powered component. Its relevance to this module is specific rather than general: of all the instruments available for a maritime interdiction or quarantine of Taiwan, submarines are the one that can impose risk on shipping without a visible presence, which changes the character of the problem for anyone trying to characterise what is happening or attribute it. A ship that does not sail because of an announced exercise area is a countable event; a ship that does not sail because of an insurance assessment is not.
- Points forts
- Numbers, proximity to the theatre, and a construction rate that has sustained modernisation of both the conventional and nuclear components. Undersea presence is inherently difficult for the other side to characterise or answer proportionately.
- Limites
- Submarine quieting and crew proficiency are the two variables outside observers cannot verify, and published assessments differ substantially on both. The first island chain constrains movement into the Pacific through a small number of well-monitored channels — the same geography Japan's southwestern posture is built around. Vigil publishes no boat numbers, no classes in service by count, no dispositions, no patrol areas and no readiness.
