- Historique notable
- Established on 24 March 2025 at the Ministry of Defense in Tokyo, and led from its first day by a full general. Before it, the Joint Staff Office combined advisory and operational functions and no standing joint operational command existed; the SDF's chief of staff would have had to advise the government and command the forces simultaneously in a crisis. The new command exists because the 2022 National Defence Strategy identified grey-zone situations, a Taiwan contingency and cross-domain operations as the cases the old arrangement handled worst. It is also designed to work with an upgraded US Forces Japan headquarters, which is the alliance half of the same reform.
- Points forts
- A standing joint command removes the improvisation step at the moment it would be least available, and gives the alliance a single Japanese counterpart for operational coordination.
- Limites
- New, and untested by anything more than exercises. Japan's participation in any Taiwan contingency remains governed by how a situation is formally characterised under Japanese law — a political determination, not a military one, and a command structure does not change it. Recruitment shortfalls across the SDF are a persistent and publicly acknowledged constraint. Vigil publishes no basing, posture or deployment information.

Japan stood up its Joint Operations Command in March 2025 and the United States announced in July 2024 that it would expand USFJ's role toward a joint force headquarters intended to work with it. Vigil records both announcements; the pairing is stated policy on both sides and its implementation is not complete.
