The alliance with the United States is the organising fact of Japanese security policy, and its significance in this module is geographic before it is political: Japan's southwest island chain runs to within roughly a hundred and ten kilometres of Taiwan and hosts the largest American forward presence in the region. That makes Japan a participant in the consequences of any contingency whether or not it chooses to be one. What the alliance does not do is settle Japan's own response: involvement is constrained by constitutional interpretation, by domestic politics, and by a legal framework in which any response depends on how a situation is formally characterised. Statements about what could permit a response are not commitments, and this module does not treat them as such.
Pourquoi c’est important
It is why the Taiwan Strait is not a bilateral question. The alliance places American forces on Japanese territory within reach of a contingency neither government has committed to, which means Japanese constitutional interpretation is a variable in a Taiwanese security calculation — and, since late 2025, a target of Chinese pressure in its own right.
