Synthèse

Tokyo switched recognition to Beijing in 1972 and has conducted relations with Taipei since through the Japan–Taiwan Exchange Association and its counterpart, with a large trade and investment relationship, visa-free travel and the closest people-to-people ties either has. The security content is newer: a 2021 statement that peace and stability in the strait matter to Japan's security, the "Taiwan contingency is a Japan contingency" formulation of late 2021, coast guard coordination on the Yonaguni and Senkaku approaches, and, in November 2025, remarks by Japan's prime minister about the conditions under which a Taiwan contingency could constitute a survival-threatening situation for Japan — remarks that produced sustained PRC pressure on Japan and that the module records as an event. On 12 August 2026 the Japanese and Taiwanese navies rehearsed the eastern approaches on the same morning, without coordination either government has acknowledged. Japan hosts the United States forces that any contingency would run through and has no defence arrangement with Taiwan of its own; the relationship is recorded as security cooperation because that is what its content has become, and as unofficial because that is what its form remains.

Pourquoi c’est important

Taiwan's eastern approaches are Japan's south-western ones, and the module's contingency thinking — resupply from the east, the Miyako Strait, the Yonaguni gap — depends on a state that has no treaty with Taipei and every reason to avoid saying what it would do. The relationship is where Japan's ambiguity lives, beside the American one.
