Synthèse

The first agreement, in March 2025, committed the SDF to integration into state institutions in principle and settled almost nothing in practice. The January 2026 fighting cost the SDF its Arab-majority territories and produced a narrower, US-brokered agreement on 30 January: one Ministry of Defence division formed from three SDF brigades, plus a Kobani brigade attached to an Aleppo-affiliated division, against an earlier roadmap of three divisions and two specialised brigades. Implementation ran through the spring and summer — divisions named, commanders taking posts, the Women's Protection Units reported as heading to Interior rather than Defence — and on 25 August 2026 the SDF announced its own dissolution as an independent military force. What survives is a set of individual appointments inside two ministries; the relationship recorded here ended because one of its parties ceased to exist as an institution.

Pourquoi c’est important

It is the module's test of whether a transition can absorb an armed force without either destroying it or being captured by it. The answer so far is that the state got the structure it wanted and the SDF got a set of posts rather than a guarantee — and that the files integration deferred, above all constitutional recognition of Kurdish rights, now have no armed counterparty behind them.

• The full text of the 30 January 2026 agreement has not been published; the division-and-brigade structure is reported by both parties and is not verified against an establishment document.
• Which SDF commanders now hold which posts, and under whose orders they operate in practice, is reported piecemeal. Vigil records no command arrangement below the ministry level.
• Whether the dissolution announcement ended the SDF's institutions as well as its command — its media, its diplomatic representation abroad — is not established.

• The sequence can be read as an integration that succeeded on the state's terms, or as a capitulation dressed as integration after the January defeats. The instruments are consistent with both; the difference is in what the appointed commanders can still decide, which is not public.
