- Historique notable
- Oversees NATO Air Policing, which NATO describes as a permanent peacetime mission involving the continuous presence of fighter aircraft ready to react to airspace violations. It has been part of NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence since 1961.

- The three operations centres have deliberately overlapping areas, which NATO says provides the redundancy that keeps air command and control continuous.
