Nature de ce terrain

A stretch of ordinary north-eastern European farmland and forest whose significance is entirely relational: it is where Poland meets Lithuania, with Kaliningrad on one side and Belarus on the other. Nothing about the ground itself is difficult. Everything about its position is.

Caractère physique

Terrain dominant
Gently rolling glacial country — farmland, forest, lakes and small towns. Low relief throughout, with no mountain, major river or other natural barrier along the frontier. It is unremarkable ground, and that is worth stating plainly because its reputation suggests otherwise.
Implications pour la mobilité
Road and rail cross the frontier at a small number of points, and the region is served by ordinary regional infrastructure rather than by anything built for the purpose. The constraint here is not the terrain but the geometry: this is the only land frontier between the Baltic states and the rest of allied Europe, so the alternatives to it are maritime and air rather than another road.
Contraintes saisonnières
Continental: cold winters with snow cover, wet spring thaw, warm summers. Nothing seasonal distinguishes this frontier from the rest of the region.

Portée opérationnelle générale

Vigil records what the geography IS — a narrow land connection between two allied countries, flanked by two non-allied territories — and stops there. This module publishes no assessment of how the ground would be defended or attacked, no axes, no distances between named points as military facts, and no force requirements. The reason for that restraint is specific rather than general: this particular stretch of ground is the single most over-modelled piece of geography in European security commentary, and the modelling is what a reference work should least want to add to.
