Nature de ce terrain

Finland's accession in 2023 more than doubled the length of NATO's land border with Russia. The frontier runs from the Gulf of Finland to the Arctic through terrain that is difficult in a specific way: not steep, but roadless, waterlogged and forested, with crossings spaced very far apart.

Caractère physique

Terrain dominant
Boreal forest, lake and peatland for most of its length, rising to open fell country in the far north. Relief is low but the ground is broken by water almost everywhere: Finland has tens of thousands of lakes, and the frontier region is among the least drained. Settlement thins steadily northward until it is almost absent.
Implications pour la mobilité
Movement is confined to a small number of roads and to the rail crossings, and the spacing between them is measured in hundreds of kilometres in the north. Off the roads the ground is slow in every season for reasons of water and forest rather than gradient. Finland closed its road crossings with Russia during the 2023–24 instrumentalised-migration episode, which is the clearest demonstration that this frontier is managed at a handful of points rather than along a line.
Contraintes saisonnières
The defining variable in this theatre. Deep snow and hard frost from late autumn to spring; a thaw that makes unsurfaced ground impassable; a short summer with continuous daylight in the north and continuous darkness in winter. Seasonal change alters what is possible here more than anywhere else on the flank.

Portée opérationnelle générale

This record explains why a very long border is not the same as a very exposed one, and why Finnish defence thinking has historically been about depth and mobilisation rather than about holding a line. It describes the ground and the crossing regime. It does not describe force dispositions, contingencies or any assessment of where anything would happen.
