- Almost every short account of the Iranian military describes two forces, the Artesh and the Revolutionary Guard. There are three: the Law Enforcement Command is a branch of the armed forces in its own right, answering to the Supreme Leader alongside the other two, and it is what makes the Iranian security structure legible as a whole. Policing in Iran is not a civilian function held apart from the military; it sits inside the same command architecture, and the General Staff's mandate explicitly includes integrating law-enforcement elements in wartime. The module authors it for that reason — to hold the institutional ontology honest — and not because the current war has given it a chronology.
