- Historique notable
- Founded by Khomeini in November 1979 as a popular mobilisation body and made a component of the Revolutionary Guard, the Basij supplied the mass infantry of the war with Iraq and afterwards became the Guard's civilian face: a network of resistance bases in mosques, workplaces, schools and universities. In 2008 its district-level military structure was merged into the Guard's ground forces through the creation of provincial corps, so that its armed formations answer to the Guard's provincial commanders while the organisation keeps its own leadership for mobilisation and cultural work. Its formations are described in compiled accounts by battalion families — the Imam Ali battalions for urban security, the Ashura and Al-Zahra battalions, the Imam Hossein battalions trained for combat — and this record names those families as reported without stating their number, distribution or readiness. CRS lists Basij facilities among the targets struck in the 2026 campaign.
- Points forts
- Depth and ubiquity: a mobilisation base measured in millions of registered members, a physical presence at neighbourhood level, and a role in the Guard's concept of layered internal defence that no other Iranian institution duplicates.
- Limites
- Its military value is a matter of assessment rather than record; most of its registered membership is not a fighting force, and the distinction between mobilisation figures and deployable formations is precisely what published accounts blur. Its internal-security role in periods of unrest is documented elsewhere and is not this module's subject. Nothing here describes methods, deployments or strength.
