- Historique notable
- The air force the Shah built was the most modern in the region in 1979 and has been the most isolated since: its F-14, F-4 and F-5 fleets flew the war with Iraq and are still the core of the service, kept airworthy by an overhaul industry that has become the force's real achievement. Soviet and Chinese types were added in the 1990s and Iraqi aircraft that fled to Iran in 1991 were absorbed; reported Russian deliveries in the 2020s are carried here as reported. The service is organised in numbered tactical air bases, which this record names as a structure and not as a list. Its air-defence radars and missiles passed to the separate Air Defence Force in 2008. In both the June 2025 and the 2026 wars, Israeli and United States aircraft operated over Iran, which is the fact about this service that matters most and the one it is least able to change.

- An overhaul and reverse-engineering base without which none of its aircraft would fly, and a professional cadre with continuity back to the 1980s.
- Limites
- A fleet whose newest airframes are decades old, unable to contest airspace against the opponents it faces, which is the structural reason Iran's strike capability sits in the Guard's missile force rather than here. Nothing describes numbers, bases by name, serviceability or dispositions.
