In remarks to a gathering in Sweida, reported on 28 August 2026, Sheikh al-Aql Hikmat al-Hijri described Syria's Druze as an integral part of the State of Israel, praised the Israeli state model and asserted doctrinal common ground between the two communities. Druze figures elsewhere, including in the Golan, publicly rejected the characterisation; reporting records that al-Hijri is the most influential Druze leader in Sweida but does not speak for all Syrian Druze. On the evening of Monday 31 August fighting resumed in the western Sweida countryside between Internal Security Forces of the Interior Ministry and the National Guard, an armed formation aligned with al-Hijri. Accounts differ: Syrian state media reported ten government security personnel wounded, while regional reporting recorded one man killed and eleven wounded including a child and attributed the opening of fire to a National Guard position shelling two villages; earlier clashes west of Sweida city were reported to have killed two civilians. Calm was reported to have returned within days. The September 2025 Sweida roadmap remains unimplemented, and no negotiating track between Damascus and al-Hijri has been confirmed by either party. Israel intervened militarily on the community's behalf during the July 2025 violence; no Israeli official response to the remarks has been identified.

Why it matters. In two weeks Damascus has seen its two autonomy files move in opposite directions, and the contrast is the finding. In the northeast an armed movement exchanged institutional standing for appointments inside the state — a dispute about the terms of entry, settled by entering. In the south the community's most influential figure has publicly placed his political horizon outside the Syrian state altogether, which is not a harder version of the same negotiation but a different kind of problem: it is not a demand Damascus can meet by offering better terms. That is what makes the shooting days later worth recording despite its small scale. It indicates that the July 2025 ceasefire froze a confrontation rather than settling one, and that the freeze is now being probed from both sides while the roadmap that was supposed to replace it has stood unimplemented for nearly a year. What none of this establishes is a change in control, a Druze consensus, or Israeli policy. Al-Hijri commands a constituency and an armed formation, not a territory; the rejections from other Druze leaders are on the record; and inferring an Israeli position from a Syrian cleric's statement about Israel would be reading one party's words as another party's intent. The casualty accounts are recorded as published, including where they conflict, and neither is adopted. The observable is whether Damascus answers through the roadmap or through the Interior Ministry.
