Transport / tanker aircraft

Y-20

A large transport and tanker aircraft — unglamorous, and among the more meaningful indicators in the theatre, because reach depends on refuelling and airlift far more than on fighters.

Xian Y-20 China Entered service 2016; tanker variant fielded subsequently.

AssessmentLow confidence

Recognition context, not a stat sheet. The catalogue covers major publicly documented systems relevant to the conflicts Vigil covers — not an exhaustive order of battle. No quantities, availability or current allocations are recorded.

The record What this system is, where it comes from, who operates it and which of Vigil’s modules it is relevant to — with the evidence each of those rests on.

Conflict relevance

This is the catalogue's single record for this system. It is relevant to the module below; each module's Force Atlas shows how it is used there.

Battlefield role

Strategic airlift and, in the tanker variant, aerial refuelling — the enabling capability that determines how far and how long other aircraft can operate.

Strengths

Indigenous production of large aircraft addresses a long-standing PLA weakness, and the tanker variant directly extends the reach of the combat fleet.

Limitations

Fleet size and engine production have historically been constraints, and support-fleet capacity remains a limiting factor on sustained operations at distance. No inventory or basing detail is published here.

Campaign relevance

Derived: a participant organisation in these campaigns carries a typed equipment association with this system. That is not the same as documented use of the system in the campaign itself.

Visual identification

A large four-engine high-wing transport with a T-tail and a notably wide fuselage — superficially similar to Western strategic transports and most reliably identified by its size relative to escorts. The tanker derivative carries hose-and-drogue pods under the outer wings, which is the only external difference visible in most photographs.

Documented conflict use

In service since the mid-2010s and reported by Taiwan's defence ministry in activity around the island, including the tanker derivative: on 25 May 2026 Taiwan identified an aerial refueller operating with fighters and an airborne early-warning aircraft. The tanker's appearance is the analytically significant part — refuelling capacity is the constraint on sustained activity east of Taiwan, and its presence in a detection report says more than the transport role does. These are Taiwanese detections published by Taiwan and are read on those terms.
