Battlefield role

Long-endurance intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, including circumnavigations of the island and flights into the sector east of it. The role is dual in a way that matters here: the same sortie collects and signals, and the signalling half is what makes it part of the pressure system rather than merely part of the intelligence one.

Strengths

Endurance measured in many hours at a fraction of the cost of a crewed sortie, with no aircrew exposed. That asymmetry is the point: a long UAV flight that costs the sender little can oblige the receiver to respond with crewed aircraft that cost a great deal, and repeating it consumes the smaller air force's airframe hours rather than the larger one's.

Limitations

Slow, unstealthy and straightforward to detect and track, which is precisely why they appear so consistently in Taiwan's published counts — visibility is not a failure of the mission when part of the mission is to be seen. Shooting one down is technically easy and politically fraught, which is the dilemma the systems are cheap enough to exploit. Vigil publishes no flight paths, no orbits, no basing and no counts by type.

Campaign relevance

Derived: a participant organisation in these campaigns carries a typed equipment association with this system. That is not the same as documented use of the system in the campaign itself.

Visual identification

Several distinct airframes under one heading: a twin-boom propeller-driven type with an under-nose sensor turret; a twin-tailed piston type of similar layout; and a high-altitude jet with an unmistakable joined diamond wing whose forward and rear surfaces meet at the tips. The last of these is confusable with nothing else in the region.

Documented conflict use

Identified by type in Taiwan's daily defence ministry detection reports since 2021, including flights around the island and into the eastern sector, and in reporting of the theatre exercises announced from August 2022 onward; a long-endurance type was tracked in the Taiwanese air defence identification zone in July 2026. These are Taiwanese detections published by Taiwan and are read here on those terms; no tracks, routes or patterns are published.
