Battlefield role
The lowest and cheapest tier of Ukraine's counter-air system, sitting below the surface-to-air missile layers and alongside anti-aircraft artillery, MANPADS, mobile fire groups and electronic warfare. Their purpose is cost-exchange: a one-way attack drone is individually easy to destroy but is launched in numbers designed to exhaust whatever is used against it, and engaging that threat with expensive interceptor missiles is not sustainable. A propeller-driven interceptor breaks that exchange by being cheap enough to lose.
Typical employment
Employed as one tier of a layered defence rather than as a standalone system. This record publishes no basing, no siting and no engagement doctrine.

Strengths
Cheap, domestically produced, and made by many firms at once, which makes the capability difficult to interdict and quick to iterate. Because it is Ukrainian rather than donated, it is the one significant air-defence layer whose supply is not set by decisions in other capitals.
Limitations
Speed is the constraint that matters. A propeller-driven interceptor is matched against propeller-driven attack drones and is not obviously matched against faster jet-powered variants, and Russian production has been reported shifting toward the jet types. Effectiveness claims come from manufacturers and from the Ukrainian government rather than from independent measurement, and reported interception figures merge kinetic kills with drones neutralised by electronic warfare.
Observed adaptations
Production moved from workshop scale to industrial scale during 2025–26, distributed across more than twenty Ukrainian producers rather than concentrated in one programme.
Russian one-way attack drone production has been reported shifting toward faster jet-powered Geran variants, which a propeller-driven interceptor is not well matched against. Whether the interceptor layer holds against that shift is an open question rather than a settled outcome.
Documented conflict use
In documented use during 2025–26 as part of the layered defence against one-way attack drones. Reported performance, all attributed: the manufacturer Wild Hornets stated that its Sting interceptors destroyed more than 3,000 Shahed and Gerbera loitering munitions during May 2026, and Sky Fall stated that its P1-SUN system destroyed more than 3,500 Shahed-type drones over the preceding six months. Ukrainian reporting for May 2026 put overall drone interception at 7,476 of 8,150 launched, or 91.73 per cent. Independent monthly analysis covering the same period records a lower figure on a different basis — a hit rate of 6.65 per cent of all Shahed-type launches in May 2026 — because it counts recorded impacts rather than claimed interceptions. Both are reported here; neither is treated as the measurement.
