Kurz gesagt

Russia's dependence on China as the largest buyer of its discounted crude and the principal supplier of the dual-use components and machine tools that keep its defence production running. China is a declared non-supplier of lethal aid, and the module holds that boundary distinct from the enabling.

China and the war in Ukraine relied on economically by Russia. A directional arrangement: the two parties do not hold the same position in it. Authored once and read from both ends.

Zusammenfassung

China is the largest buyer of discounted Russian crude and the principal source of the dual-use components and machine tools on which Russian defence manufacturing depends. Together those two flows are what made the Western sanctions architecture survivable: they replaced the market Russia lost and the imports it was denied, without China becoming a party to the war. Beijing is a declared non-supplier of lethal aid, and this module keeps that boundary separate from the enabling rather than collapsing the two — the distinction is the whole of what China has chosen. The neutrality is not symmetrical: it costs Russia little and Ukraine a great deal, which is why it is described here as a dependency Russia relies on rather than as an even-handed position. China also treats the Western response as a rehearsal it is studying, a reading stated by its critics and implied by its own analysts.

Warum es wichtig ist

It is the reason sanctions produced adaptation rather than collapse, and therefore the reason the economic theory of this war did not hold. It is also the single largest dependency Russia has acquired since 2022: the relationship that solved its problem is one it cannot exit and does not control the terms of.

Was unbekannt bleibt

  • Vigil publishes no trade volumes, discounts, component values or transaction figures. The dependence is recorded as structural rather than measured.
  • The dual-use flow is documented in category rather than in detail; which specific components reach which production lines is not established.
  • The declared non-supply of lethal aid is a stated position. Enforcement against third-party and intermediary transfers is contested, and this record does not adjudicate individual allegations.
  • Chinese decision-making is not observable. Nothing here characterises intent.

Lesarten, die die Belege ebenfalls stützen

  • The enabling boundary can be read as a calculated ceiling — support short of anything that would trigger secondary sanctions on Chinese banks — or as a genuine limit on how far Beijing wishes this war to go. The observable behaviour is identical under both, and the distinction only becomes testable if the cost of crossing it changes.
