Wo sich Bewegung konzentriert
The junction of the north–south corridor with the one broad passage through the coastal range. It is the single most consequential point in Syrian geography: control of Homs links or severs the capital, the north and the coast.
The principal port and the coastal region's centre, and the marker through which the littoral's external connections — commercial and, under negotiated terms, foreign military — run.
The second port and the southern anchor of the coast, whose facility is one of the two subjects of the outstanding basing negotiation with Russia.

- Beherrschendes Gelände
- A cultivated inland corridor running north–south between the desert to the east and the mountains to the west, carrying the country's main road and rail alignment and its chain of major cities. West of it the coastal range — Jabal al-Ansariyah and its southern continuation — rises as a continuous forested and terraced wall, broken principally by the Homs gap. Beyond the range a narrow, dense, intensively farmed coastal plain runs to the sea.
- Folgen für die Beweglichkeit
- Movement along the spine is straightforward and heavily channelled: the corridor is where the roads are, and a force moving north or south in western Syria is on them. Movement across the range is a different matter — the coastal mountains are a genuine obstacle with a small number of practicable east–west connections, of which the Homs gap is the historic one. That asymmetry has governed western Syria since antiquity: the interior and the coast are two systems joined at a few points, and whoever holds the joins holds both.
- Jahreszeitliche Beschränkungen
- Mediterranean: wet, sometimes snowy winters in the range and heavy rain on the coast, hot dry summers inland. Winter weather closes higher ground and reduces aerial observation over the corridor for extended periods. The February 2023 earthquakes are the reminder that the region's most consequential physical events here have not been weather at all.

- The coastal range is the only large-scale natural barrier in Syria and the most consequential: it separates the littoral from the interior and gives the coast a distinct history and communal geography. The Orontes runs north along the corridor; the Homs gap is the one broad natural passage between the sea and the interior, and every trade route and campaign in this region for three thousand years has used it.
- Urbanisierung und Besiedlung
- The highest in the country by a wide margin. Damascus, Homs, Hama and Aleppo hold a large share of Syria's population and almost all of its industry, and the coastal cities add ports and a dense rural hinterland. This is the ground on which the war's sieges were fought, where most of the destroyed housing stock is, and where reconstruction will succeed or fail.
Weitreichende operative Bedeutung
The spine explains both the durability of the old order and the speed of its collapse. Three effects. First, the corridor is the state: government, industry, population and ports are on it, so a force that takes the corridor does not need to take the country. Second, the coastal range gave the former regime a defensible core and its successor a region with a distinct communal composition and a legacy of association with the fallen state — which is the geography behind the March 2025 coastal violence and the protection question that follows it. Third, because everything is concentrated here, the reverse is also true: a cascade along the corridor is a national collapse, which is what November–December 2024 demonstrated in eleven days.
Beobachtet
Every decisive phase of the war was fought along this axis — the battle for Aleppo from 2012, the sieges and reconquest of 2016–18, and the 2024 offensive that ran the corridor from Aleppo through Hama and Homs to Damascus without a battle at the end of it.
Eingeschätzt
The 2024 cascade is better explained by the corridor's structure than by any single engagement: on an axis where the cities are the state and the road between them is the only one, the loss of the northern anchor made each subsequent position untenable in turn.
