Was geschah

Eine Preisliste des Energieministeriums, herausgegeben am Samstag, dem 12. September 2026, und gültig ab Sonntag, dem 13. September, erhöhte den Dieselpreis um etwa 40 Prozent auf 175 syrische Pfund je Liter und den Benzinpreis um etwa 28 Prozent. Noch am selben Abend begannen Proteste, die sich in den folgenden Tagen über Aleppo, Idlib, Hama, Dara’a, Raqqa, Deir ez-Zor und Hasakah ausbreiteten; Demonstrierende verbrannten Reifen und blockierten Straßen, darunter die Fernstraße Hasakah–Deir ez-Zor, wodurch der Verkehr der Tanklastwagen zum Erliegen kam. Berichte beschreiben sie als die umfassendsten Demonstrationen seit dem Sturz der Regierung Assad. Energieminister Mohammed al-Bashir verteidigte die Erhöhung zunächst. Am Donnerstag, dem 17. September, kündigte er eine gestaffelte Struktur an: subventionierter Diesel zu 115 Pfund je Liter für Heizung, Landwirtschaft und für staatliche Unterstützung berechtigte Verbraucher, eine zweite Stufe zu 150 Pfund für einige Produktions- und Dienstleistungssektoren und die Standardstufe unverändert bei 175. Die Preise für Benzin und Gas blieben unverändert.

THE TRANSITION'S FIRST DOMESTIC REVERSAL, AND IT CAME FROM THE STREET RATHER THAN FROM AN INSTITUTION. Every test of the government's authority until now has been against an armed party, a foreign state or a region; this one was against consumers in cities it governs, and the government moved in four days. What that establishes is a responsive limit on fiscal policy — subsidy removal is the standard condition of the reconstruction financing Damascus needs, and it has now been shown to be politically priced. What it does not establish is weakness or strength: a partial retreat that keeps the headline rate and adds tiers below it is a concession and a holding of the line at once, and reading it as either capitulation or skill goes past the evidence. The geography is the other half. The protests were heaviest in the north and east, including in provinces only recently brought under Damascus's administration, which makes this the first occasion on which a single national economic decision produced simultaneous unrest across the transition's different constituencies.
