Approximately 20,000 seafarers were stranded aboard around 1,600 vessels in late April, with dwindling water, food and fuel aboard and a mounting mental-health toll. An IMO-coordinated evacuation began in June covering more than 11,000; about 6,000 remained aboard roughly 500 ships by mid-July. By 11 August the IMO recorded 65 confirmed incidents and 17 confirmed seafarer fatalities.
