ما كانت هذه الحملة

A four-year encirclement of a Burkinabè provincial capital: roads mined, convoys ambushed, surrounding populations driven inside, and resupply by air. The town has not fallen, which is the point — this is a method for making a place ungovernable without capturing it.

This is the same instrument as the Malian fuel blockade, applied without limit, and running four years longer. Where Bamako has been squeezed through its import corridors, Djibo has been enclosed: the population concentrated inside it by force, the roads denied, the supply line moved into the air. It is also the clearest available answer to the question the whole module keeps asking — whether reach becomes control. Here an armed coalition has had a town surrounded for over four years and has not taken it, while the state has held a town it cannot administer or supply by road. Neither side's position is what a map of control would show.

ملخص

From 16–17 February 2022 jihadist forces, primarily Ansarul Islam and JNIM, encircled Djibo, the provincial capital of Soum in northern Burkina Faso. Infrastructure was destroyed, roads were mined and supply convoys were ambushed; surrounding populations were forcibly relocated into the town, taking it from about 60,000 inhabitants to between 200,000 and 300,000, and about 370,000 besieged by December 2022. From around May 2022 resupply depended chiefly on humanitarian airlift, with occasional military-escorted road convoys — the first in four months, of 74 trucks, ran in March 2023, and a convoy that reached the town in June 2023 was ambushed on the return with 31 or more soldiers killed. Major assaults followed at intervals: the Gaskinde convoy ambush of 26 September 2022 killed 26 soldiers and 10 civilians and destroyed 95 vehicles; an assault reported at around 3,000 fighters on 26 November 2023 killed at least 40 civilians; a large coordinated attack on 11 May 2025 killed at least 100 people, mostly soldiers, with roughly US$3 million in munitions reported captured; and a further major raid came in September 2025 during a wider Soum-corridor offensive. The town has not been captured.

الأهداف المعلنة

ما يقوله المشاركون. يذكر كل بند الموضع الذي أُعلن فيه الموقف؛ ويسجل Vigil أنه صدر، لا أنه صحيح.

  • The besieging forces have not published a stated objective for the encirclement that Vigil has been able to source. What is recorded here is behaviour, not a declared aim.

المراحل

February – October 2022 الثقة: متوسطة

Encirclement and population concentration

The town was surrounded, infrastructure destroyed, roads mined and bridges cut. Surrounding populations were driven inside, multiplying the population several times over. An attempt at negotiation in April 2022, after the Emir of Djibo met Ansarul Islam commanders, produced a brief easing and a 100-truck convoy — then collapsed, with pro-government militias reported to have killed 20 civilians attempting to leave. By October humanitarian airlift had become the primary means of supply.

September 2022 – 2023 الثقة: عالية

Attrition on the relief columns

The heaviest documented losses fell on resupply rather than on the town. The Gaskinde ambush of 26 September 2022 killed 26 soldiers and 10 civilians and destroyed 95 vehicles. A 74-truck convoy in March 2023 was the first in four months; another reached the town in June 2023 and was ambushed on the return, with 31 or more soldiers killed.

November 2023 – September 2025 الثقة: متوسطة

Mass assaults without capture

Attacks escalated in scale without producing occupation. An assault reported at around 3,000 fighters on 26 November 2023 killed at least 40 civilians; the military claimed over 400 insurgents killed in counter-operations, a figure that is its own and unverified. Local sources said the military base was overrun; the government said it was retaken. On 11 May 2025 a large coordinated attack killed at least 100, mostly soldiers, with roughly US$3 million in munitions reported captured. A further major raid followed in September 2025.

النتيجة والوضع الحالي

Unresolved after more than four years, and unresolved in both directions. The besieging forces have not taken the town despite assaults at scale; the state has not broken the encirclement, and holds a provincial capital it supplies by air. The city is reported as compartmentalised, with civilians concentrated around the military camp and much of the remainder emptied. Analysts have assessed that JNIM could probably capture Djibo if it chose to — an assessment Vigil records as theirs, and which if correct means the siege continues because it is preferred, not because it has failed.

التكيّفات المرصودة

التداعيات السياسية

A provincial capital supplied by air for four years is a standing refutation of the security argument on which the government took power.

التداعيات العسكرية

Route security consumes forces and produces the campaign's heaviest losses, while the encircling force pays little to maintain the position.

التداعيات الاقتصادية

The town's economy has been substantially destroyed; the wider Soum province is outside routine administration.

التداعيات الإنسانية

A population several times the town's original size depends on airlift, in a country whose displacement figures have not been officially updated since 2023.

ما لا يزال مجهولًا

  • Casualty figures throughout this campaign come from a mix of official statements, local sources and media reporting; military claims of insurgent losses consistently exceed independently verifiable counts and are recorded as claims.
  • Whether the military base was overrun in November 2023 is disputed between the government and local sources, and Vigil does not resolve it.
  • Current population, food availability and conditions inside the town are not published in any form Vigil can cite with a date; the figures here are from 2022 and should be read as the last established measurement.
  • The command relationship between Ansarul Islam and JNIM at specific points in the siege is not established, and attributing individual attacks between them is not possible from public sources.

قراءات تدعمها الأدلة أيضًا

  • The siege can be read as a deliberate strategy of denial — hold the town in place, deny its administration, avoid the cost of governing it — or as a repeated failure to capture an objective that has been attacked at scale four times. The analyst assessment that capture is available if wanted favours the first reading; the record of assaults is consistent with both.
  • The population concentration may reflect coercion by the besieging forces, flight from surrounding violence, or both operating together. Sources describe forcible relocation, but the relative weight of the two is not established.

ما يجب رصده

حركة المدنيين خارج البلدة

People have left for armed-group-held countryside out of desperation, which is the measure of conditions inside that no supply figure captures.

Compared with JNIM fuel blockade campaign

حملتان في هذا الملف، موضوعتان جنبًا إلى جنب وفق الحقول التي يحملها السجلان كلاهما. لا شيء هنا مُشتق أو مُقيَّم بدرجات أو مرتَّب.

The same instrument at two scales. Both apply pressure to movement and supply rather than to positions, and both are run by the same coalition — but one encircles a single provincial town completely and has done for four years, while the other interdicts a country's import corridors intermittently and has eased and resumed. Read together they show what the method does when it is applied without limit and when it is applied at national scale, and the two are not the same phenomenon.

The state has neither broken the blockade nor collapsed under it: convoys still move, at higher cost and lower frequency, under escort arrangements that commit forces needed elsewhere. Fuel and power in the capital remain degraded relative to 2024, and the campaign has not been reversed by any military action. Whether it tightens or eases is one of the module's standing watch items.
الأثر الإنسانيA population several times the town's original size depends on airlift, in a country whose displacement figures have not been officially updated since 2023.Market supply and relief movement depend on the same corridors, so price rises and access constraints compound rather than merely coincide.
