The Houthi movement declared a blockade on vessels calling at Saudi ports in July 2026, and vessel traffic through Bab el-Mandeb fell by about a quarter. From August 2026 the Red Sea coast node at Jazan was repeatedly claimed as a target, and on 10–11 September 2026 the movement took Mokha, Dhubab and Perim island — the last government-held stretch of the Yemeni coast down to the strait. One count put transits at twelve on the evening of 10 September against twenty-nine or thirty on a normal day. Presence on that shore is not closure of the strait, and no independently observed interference with non-Saudi shipping has been read: the measured effect is shipowner and underwriter behaviour.

Saudi Arabia rerouted Asia-bound crude through the Suez Canal. A voyage from Yanbu to South Korea that runs about 24 days via Bab el-Mandeb runs about 54 days via Suez, with reported cargo adjustments to meet canal draught limits.

The region's principal Hormuz alternative depends on a second contested waterway, so the two straits behave as one coupled system rather than as an exposure and its remedy. Longer voyages also consume tanker capacity, which raises delivered cost independently of the volume shipped. On 10 September 2026 the line feeding the route was itself struck and shut as a precautionary measure on the same morning the port at the head of that route changed hands, so the bypass came under pressure at its middle and at its mouth within the same forty-eight hours.
