Historically the Armenia–Türkiye and Armenia–Iran frontiers; since the start of 2026 no Armenian border checkpoint. Whether any Russian border personnel remain on the green border is stated by neither government and is not authored.
A 1992 treaty gave Russian border troops the guarding of Armenia's frontiers with Türkiye and Iran, the external borders of the former Soviet Union, alongside Armenian units — an arrangement that outlasted every other Soviet-era border deployment in the South Caucasus and became part of the security guarantee Armenia relied on until 2020. After the 2023 loss of Karabakh and the 2024 freeze of Armenia's CSTO participation, Yerevan asked for the Russian presence to be removed from the places where its symbolism was sharpest: Zvartnots airport in August 2024, the Agarak crossing to Iran from January 2025, the Margara crossing to Türkiye from March 2025 and the Akhurik rail crossing at the start of 2026. Each transfer was agreed rather than forced, which is the point: this is the presence Armenia could end by request and did, while the Gyumri base, held under a lease to 2044, is the one it has not moved to end.
Historically, three decades of continuity and the standing it gave Russia on two of Armenia's four borders.
The presence exists now as an arrangement whose checkpoints have all been handed over; its remaining substance is not published by either government. Vigil records the wind-down as complete at the checkpoints and does not assert that nothing remains.
