A long, high, mostly undelimited boundary running through terrain where villages, pastures and water sources sit across a line nobody drew precisely. The delimitation problem is a terrain problem before it is a diplomatic one.

- التضاريس الغالبة
- جبال ومرتفعات في كل مكان، مع خط حدودي يمر على امتداد خطوط القمم وعبر الوديان، وفي بعض المواضع بين القرى مباشرة. وتقع التجمعات السكنية في الوديان على الجانبين، وغالبًا على مرأى من الخط. وفي الجنوب يضيق الحزام حول سيونيك، حيث يلتقي الخط الحدودي والحدود الإيرانية وجيب ناخيتشيفان في مسافة قصيرة — وهذا هو السبب الجغرافي لحساسية مسألة الممر على هذا النحو.

- Cross-border movement is confined to a small number of valley routes and has been closed since the 1990s. Along the line itself, terrain determines everything: the positions each side holds follow ridgelines and dominating ground, and the practical consequence is that villages, roads, pastures and water sources frequently sit below ground held by the other party. That is the physical basis of the recurring incidents — proximity rather than intent, in a place where the line's exact position has never been agreed.

- Winter closes higher sections and reduces activity along much of the belt; summer brings livestock to upland pastures that in several places straddle the disputed line, which is a recurring source of friction with no political content at all. Agricultural cycles rather than military ones drive much of the movement that produces incidents.

- Water is the underappreciated element. Several reservoirs, irrigation systems and springs sit on or near the undelimited line, and the 2024 Tavush delimitation involved practical questions about road access and water supply alongside the political ones. In this terrain, delimitation is not an abstract cartographic exercise: moving a line moves who can reach a spring.

الأهمية العملياتية العامة
Three effects. First, the boundary was an internal Soviet administrative line until 1991 and was never surveyed to international standards, so there is genuinely no agreed line to police — the incidents that recur along it are a product of that ambiguity rather than of any decision. Second, because settlements sit close to and below the line, delimitation has direct consequences for specific communities' land, water and road access, which is why the 2024 Tavush transfer was politically costly out of proportion to its size. Third, the southern convergence around Syunik makes the transport question inseparable from the border question: any route to Nakhchivan crosses the narrowest and most sensitive ground on the frontier, within a short distance of Iran.
مرصود
Incidents along undelimited sections have recurred since the 1990s and continued after 2020, including exchanges in the northern sections. A first delimitation of roughly a dozen kilometres in the Tavush direction was completed in 2024, involving the transfer of four villages to Azerbaijani control and requiring practical arrangements for a road and for water access. Delimitation has not extended substantially beyond that section.

Treating the delimitation problem as primarily political understates how much of it is cartographic and practical. Where the line has been agreed, it was agreed village by village with arrangements for roads and water — which suggests the process is workable and slow rather than blocked, and that its pace is a function of local complexity as much as of the wider negotiation.
