A gas turbine giving high power and cold-weather starting, the reason it equipped the northern formations; the T-80BVM's reactive armour, sights and fire control bring it close to the T-90M; a large Soviet storage base that has sustained years of refurbishment.

A thirsty engine and a demanding supply chain; the same carousel autoloader vulnerability as the T-72, with the same documented catastrophic losses; and a production base at Omsk whose new-build capacity, as opposed to refurbishment of Soviet hulls, is disputed in specialist analysis and is not established. Fleet and production figures are not reproduced here.

A low hull with six road wheels and a rounded turret carrying reactive armour blocks; the T-80BVM shows Relikt armour arrays on the turret front and sides and a distinctive rear exhaust arrangement from the turbine. Hard to separate from a T-72 except by the wheels and the turret rear.

Задокументоване застосування в конфлікті

Documented in Russian use from February 2022 — including in the Kyiv and Kharkiv axes — and continuously since; open-source trackers record T-80 losses in excess of a thousand by the end of 2024, and captured T-80BVM in Ukrainian hands. Russian ministry announcements of T-80BVM deliveries continued through 2025–2026; specialist analysis disputes whether Omsk builds new hulls at all. Ukrainian T-80 use is documented with heavy losses in the 2022 defensive battles. Counts are not reproduced here.
