- Founded on 2 September 2016 north of Ménaka by Moussa Ag Acharatoumane, a founding member and former spokesman of the MNLA, with a former Malian colonel representing the Chamanamas, the MSA broke from the MNLA over the Kidal-centred leadership's neglect of the east. Within a year it divided along community lines into a Daoussahak wing under Ag Acharatoumane and a Chamanamas wing that went its own way in 2017. The Daoussahak wing set aside the independence demand and cooperated with the Malian government and, from 2017, with French forces against Islamic State in the Greater Sahara, which was recruiting among rival communities in the same zone; the Islamic State leader threatened its leaders by name in 2018. With GATIA and the army it fought the Ménaka campaign that ended in defeat at Andéramboukane in June 2022, after which Islamic State Sahel consolidated most of the region. Its trajectory is the counter-example inside the Azawad lineage: a movement that took the state's side against the jihadists while its former partners fought the state.
