- Formed on 20 August 2013 when Mokhtar Belmokhtar — who had left AQIM's Saharan command after disputes with its leadership and mounted the In Amenas gas-plant attack in January 2013 — merged his Signatories in Blood katiba with the remnants of MUJAO, the AQIM offshoot that had ruled Gao during the occupation. The merger began under a compromise leadership to keep Belmokhtar and MUJAO's leaders apart. In May 2015 its titular head, Adnan Abu Walid al-Sahraoui, pledged allegiance to Islamic State without consulting Belmokhtar or the shura; Belmokhtar repudiated the pledge, took direct command by August, and the dissident faction became the seed of Islamic State in the Greater Sahara — today's IS-Sahel. The remainder turned to urban terror: the Radisson Blu attack in Bamako in November 2015, claimed jointly with AQIM, and the Ouagadougou hotel and café attacks of January 2016. AQIM announced the group's return to its fold in December 2015, and in March 2017 it merged with AQIM's Saharan command, Ansar Dine and Katiba Macina into JNIM.
