Finland acceded in April 2023 and Sweden in March 2024, and with them the Baltic's shores became allied except at the Russian ends. What that does not remove is the physical problem: reinforcing three states at the far end of a narrow sea and a single land corridor still depends on ships, aircraft and one railway.

The asset is access to the Baltic states: the sea routes across the Baltic, the air corridors above it, and the land corridor between Poland and Lithuania that this module maps as the Suwałki ground. Before 2023 two of the states bordering that sea were outside the Alliance, and allied movement across their territory, waters and airspace was a matter for national decision.

Accession removed that uncertainty. Finland joined on 4 April 2023 and Sweden on 7 March 2024, completing NATO's tenth enlargement wave. The institutional consequences followed quickly: a multi-corps land component command became operational at Mikkeli in September 2025, and NATO established its ninth forward formation in Finland under Swedish framework leadership in June 2026.

What is exposed is capacity rather than permission. The sea, air and rail links into the Baltic states are the same physical objects they were before accession, and the same objects this module's undersea chain shows to be severable. Finnish accession also more than doubled the length of NATO's land border with Russia, which adds a frontier to defend at the same time as it adds depth behind the Baltic states.
