This record describes the standing relationship, not the current campaign. Diplomatic relations were severed in 1980 and have not been restored, and both states have maintained an openly adversarial posture toward each other since. On 28 February 2026 that relationship entered open armed conflict: by 25 March the Congressional Research Service recorded more than ten thousand targets struck in Iran, and Iran had fired thousands of drones and missiles across the region. A memorandum of understanding signed on 17 June 2026 produced a sixty-day pause that broke down within three weeks and expired unextended on 17 August. At the research cutoff no agreement was in force. The type carries one value by design: Vigil does not grade how adversarial a relationship is.

Almost every other relationship in this module is positioned relative to this one — the Gulf basing arrangements, the sanctions architecture, the mediation channels and the divergence among the Gulf states themselves. It is the axis the regional system is currently organised around, which is precisely why it is recorded as a durable structure rather than as a description of the fighting.

  Signed by the Iranian President and the United States President; Pakistan hosted and mediated. Established a sixty-day negotiating window and, on the Iranian side, an undertaking to use best efforts for the safe passage of commercial vessels without charge for sixty days only. It was declared over by the United States President on 7 July 2026 and expired unextended on 17 August. The parties' own term is "memorandum of understanding" — it is not styled a ceasefire, an armistice or a peace agreement, and Vigil does not relabel it. Its fourteen points have not been read in an official text and are not authored.
