Human Rights Watch published an investigation into two air strikes on Kyrnia, in Mali's Mopti region, on 15 June. It reported that eight civilians, including three children, were killed when munitions struck near the village chief's residence and a cattle market. The investigation relied on witness interviews, satellite imagery, geolocated footage and material published by Africa Corps itself, which had claimed the strike targeted armed-group commanders. Human Rights Watch reported that JNIM fighters were present elsewhere in the village but found no known armed-group casualties at the two impact locations, and assessed the attack as apparently unlawful under the laws of war. That legal characterisation is Human Rights Watch's; Vigil records it as the organisation's finding and does not independently adopt it.

Why it matters. The investigation converts a poorly documented June strike into a substantial civilian-harm case involving Moscow's formal successor to Wagner. It also illustrates the danger of treating an armed group's control of a settlement as sufficient evidence that civilian locations within it are military targets. What this week changed is the evidence, not the conflict: the observable is whether any official Malian or Russian investigation follows, which has not happened in comparable earlier cases.
