It reported that eight civilians, including three children, were killed when munitions struck near the village chief's residence and a cattle market. The investigation relied on witness interviews, satellite imagery, geolocated footage and material published by Africa Corps itself, which had claimed the strike targeted armed-group commanders. Human Rights Watch reported that JNIM fighters were present elsewhere in the village but found no known armed-group casualties at the two impact locations, and assessed the attack as apparently unlawful under the laws of war. That legal characterisation is Human Rights Watch's; Vigil records it as the organisation's finding and does not independently adopt it.
Why it matters. The investigation converts a poorly documented June strike into a substantial civilian-harm case involving Moscow's formal successor to Wagner. It also illustrates the danger of treating an armed group's control of a settlement as sufficient evidence that civilian locations within it are military targets.
