W skrócie
The National Guard, founded by law on 23 August 1991 as a voluntary militarised self-defence formation and now a component of the National Armed Forces under a 2010 law, whose commander answers to the armed forces commander. Its own site describes it as the armed forces’ largest and most territorially distributed structure, organised since 3 January 2018 into four regional brigades — the only Latvian component that publishes its brigades.

- Istotna historia
- The law on the National Guard of 23 August 1991 created it as a voluntary militarised formation of society’s self-defence, two weeks before the state adopted its first military service law; a revised law took effect on 1 September 2010 and makes it a component of the National Armed Forces and the reserve of the regular forces. Its regional brigades of 1992 became districts in 2003 and were restored as four brigades on 3 January 2018. The State Defence Service of 2023 added a second entry route: five years in the National Guard with annual training as an alternative to eleven months in the regular units.

- The clearest published territorial structure in this module’s sixteen states: four brigades that cover the country by region, a statutory place inside the armed forces under unity of command, peacetime tasks in explosive ordnance disposal, rescue and public-order support, and now a conscription pathway that feeds it directly. The Latgale brigade is the territorial force on the Russian and Belarusian frontier.
- Ograniczenia
- The National Guard publishes brigades and battalions but no strengths by unit, and its wartime relationship to the regular brigade and to the allied brigade at Ādaži is not described on its pages. It is a territorial force of citizens serving alongside civilian life, and its published tasks are defence of the land territory in support of the armed forces rather than manoeuvre.
